In response to the rising number of speeding incidents, the town of Burnham-On-Sea in England is taking decisive action. In April 2024, EVOLIS Vision Speed Indicator Devices (SIDs) were deployed in two key areas to improve the safety of residents and visitors.
The streets of Berrow and Stoddens, often characterized by heavy and fast-moving traffic, have been equipped with these modern devices. These SIDs display the speed of passing vehicles in green or red depending on whether they are within the speed limit, thus encouraging more responsible driving. The Burnham and Highbridge Town Council, with the approval of the Somerset Council, piloted this project in response to alarming speeds, sometimes exceeding 100 km/h, observed since 2021.
The initiative has been warmly welcomed by Town Councillor Barbara Vickers, who emphasizes the importance of these installations and hopes for their extension to other critical areas such as Marine Drive and Frank Foley Way. These measures aim to prevent serious accidents and raise awareness about the dangers of speeding, especially during the tourist season.
Burnham-On-Sea’s commitment to road safety is clearly demonstrated by these proactive actions. By displaying visual reminders of speed, these SIDs play a crucial role in educating drivers and preventing accidents. The town continues to work closely with local authorities to ensure a safe environment for all its citizens and visitors.
