The United Nations launches a global road safety campaign, a major issue for saving lives

As part of its commitment to reducing the number of deaths and injuries caused by road accidents by 2030, the UN recently launched a global road safety campaign. This initiative, which began in the United States, aims to raise awareness and mobilize governments, private companies, and the general public about the need to adress what is now called a “silent pandemic”. The company Elan City, with its speed display radars, fully aligns with this objective by actively contributing to reducing speeding and saving lives.

A global campaign to reduce road accidents

The situation is alarming: each year, 1.2 million people die in road accidents, and between 40 and 50 milion people are injured. These numbers make road accidents one of the leading causes of death among young people aged 5 to 29. In the United States, for example, road accidents are the second leading cause of accidental deaths, just behind firearms. Although progress has been made, with a 3.6% decrease in deaths in 2023, the numbers remain high compared to the pre-pandemic period.

The human cost of these accidents is immense, but the economic repercussions are also heavy for governments and affected families. According to Jean Todt, the UN Special Envoy for Road Safety, “We know the remedies for road accidents, but action is slow to follow”. With this compaign, the UN aims to reverse the trend by mobilizing political will and encouraging countries to invest in safer infrastructure and vehicles.

A global mobilization for safe, inclusive, sustainable roads

Launched in New York, the #MakeASafetyStatement campaign, running until 2025, will reach more than 1.000 cities in 80 countries. Awareness messages will be relayed via billboards, social media, and other media. The UN aims to promote concrete actions in education, communication, and legislation to reduce road risks.

For example, in South Africa, the UN’s global compaign has been locally adapted with specific actions to raise awareness among young drivers about road dangers. By distributing high-visibility seat bets to taxi drivers, the UN, in collaboration with private partners, has emphasized the protection of vulnerable road users.

Guatemala, on the other hand, faces major road safety challenges, particulary with a high mortality rate among motorcyclists. Once again, prevention campaigns and targeted training sessions have been set up with the help of the UN to improve the situation.

Speed Indicator Device: a key tool in reducing speeding

In this global context, Elan City plays a crucial role in preventing accidents through its speed display radars. These devices raise driver’s awareness of their speed in real time and encourage them to adjust their driving, thus reducing the risk of speeding, which is a leading cause of serious accidents.

These devices are true prevention tools, offering an effective and sustainable solution for improving road safety. They are ideal for local communities and public administrations looking to enhance road safety in their areas. By clearly and instantly displaying drivers’speed, the radars enable them to become speeding by 9 to 15 mph in sensitive areas like schools, urban centers, and pedestrian-heavy zones.
