As part if its efforts to enhance road safety, the city of Ubeda, in Andalusia, has recently launched an innovative action plan under the leadership of Jeromino Garcia, the city councilor in charge of urban mobility.
In an interview with the local news channel 9 LA LOMA, he rvealed the new initiaitves, which include the installation of 3 EVOLIS Vision Speed Indicator Devices and 22 illuminated signs to signal pedestrian presence.
These installations aim to raise driver awareness about the importance of adhering to speed limits and ensuring pedestrian safety. This action plan also aims to help local authorites better manage road traffic and reduce speeding, with the potential future addition of mobile radars to penalize traffic violations.
The EVOLIS Vision Speed Indicator Device, installed on Cristo Rey Avenue, Cristobal Cantero Avenue and the southern bypass Munoz Molina, display vehicle speeds in real-time. These devices have been strategically placed to maximize their impact on speed reduction, considering the hight traffic volume on these roads, both day and night. In addition to displaying speed, they communicate with drivers throught instant messages, such as “thank you” for those adhering to speed limits, and warning like “danger” or “slow down” for those who exceed them. Jeronimo Garcia emphasized the importance of this eductional approach, stating that the primary purpose of these radars is to raise driver awareness and encourage more cautious driving behavior.
Besides raising driver awareness, these devices play a crucial role in collecting data on road traffic. The information gathered with allow the municipality to analyze driver behaviors and adjust safety measures accordingly. This data collection is essential for planning future actions, such as the potentiel installation of mobile radars, which could be used to enforce speed limits more rigorously.

In addition to the speed indicator device, the city of Ubeda has also installed 22 illuminated signs to enhance pedestrian safety. These signs are located on other avenues in Ubeda, such as Ramon Cajal, Libertad, Linares and Cristobal, near the busiest pedestrian crossings. They function to alert drivers of pedestrian presence and encourage them slow down. The illuminated signs are equipped with sensors that delect approaching pedestrians, activating a signal visible from afar to catch drivers’attention. This technology not only reduces the risk of accidents but also creates a safer urban environment for all road users.
